I read last week that Stuart Lawrence the brother of the murdered London teenager Stephen who died in 1993, has made a complaint of racism against the Metropolitan Police.

Sadly, it wasn’t the racism that stood out to me but that it took him to speak of his experiences in a national newspaper – for Scotland Yard, to act.

I’ve never understood why if a person makes a complaint of something like racism that, it is not just investigated straight away to see if there are any issues that need addressing.

Something which has bugged me for a while, but why is it that institutions often only act when they are shamed into doing so?

You only have to pick up a newspaper or turn on the news of late, to hear of someone having to go public with his or her experiences of discriminatory treatment because the organisation in question won’t listen to them.

Surely, it’s in everyone’s best interest to resolve any disputes early on and not drag them out?
